This year has seen a growth in the number of requests to support children, sadly we had to decline many requests as we are still unable to meet the demand. We have nearly 100 children registered on our books.
We are delighted one of our children, Munashe is now attending boarding school. It is likely that a few more will move into boarding school next year. Whilst it is more expensive to attend boarding school, we felt Munashe would perform much better and be more safe in this environment.
We launched a Saturday Club in 2016 and are delighted to advise that this is successful. The children benefit from extra tuition provided by volunteers and we’ve seen an improvement in reading and social skills. Children also bring along their homework. It is sometimes difficult for some of the children to complete homework at home as they are expected to help with chores and minding younger siblings.
Sponsoring children is the most effective model as it offers more security to a child’s classroom attendance. In most cases fees are paid in advance thereby removing any worries families might have about continued support.
We have seen a rise in requests for uniforms and school stationery. Despite the hardship faced by parents, the school system in Zimbabwe requires children to provide their own exercise books which can be quite expensive as well as providing their own text books; pens and pencils.
We are asking donors and sponsors where possible to consider supporting these needs at the beginning of each term.
Thank you to all our donors who are supporting our work. Your support is invaluable, our work would not continue without it.
